The last week of August marks the reopening of museums in New York City. With the celebration of this, Fotografiska New York exhibits Cooper & Gorfer's, "Between These Folded Walls, Utopia."
This series is exquisite in every detailed aspect, aesthetically and conceptually. The artistic duo Sarah Cooper and Nina Gorfer came together searching for "Utopia is the age of the new diaspora." Each photograph depicts young women who have been uprooted from their homes and forced into migration. This sense of displacement changes how they understand themselves and the world that is around them.
"These are adolescents on the cusp of adulthood who have experienced what it means to uproot their reality and sense of self."
From the artists, "These are adolescents on the cusp of adulthood who have experienced what it means to uproot their reality and sense of self. Young women who grew up with different cultural understandings of the world. They are women in different stages of independence and gender equality and who, because of that, are less rigidly defined, less prone to accept a ready-made understanding of the world."
Cooper & Gorfer have been creating work together since 2006 in Sweden. Their vision centers around challenging the viewer's perception to re-imagine a world "where humans live in harmony with themselves, each other and the planet."
