Exhibition Review: Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Presents

Currently on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, in New York, is a yearlong, two-part exhibition in honor of the legacy that is Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989). Robert’s work, in his time was prolific and controversial. In 1993, the Guggenheim was gifted approximately two hundred photographic works of Roberts. This exhibition showcases the works, in one of the largest comprehensive public displays of Robert’s work to date. The first part of the exhibition features highlights from Robert’s early Polaroids, collages and mixed-media works. The second part, reflects Robert’s impact on contemporary photography, featuring works by:

Rotimi Fani-Kayode (b. 1955, Lagos, Nigeria; d. 1989, London), Lyle Ashton Harris (b. 1965, Bronx, NY), Glenn Ligon (b. 1960, Bronx, NY), Zanele Muholi (b. 1972, Umlazi, South Africa), Catherine Opie (b. 1961, Sandusky, OH), and Paul Mpagi Sepuya (b. 1982, San Bernardino, CA).

The show runs January 25 - July10, and July 24,2019 - January 5, 2020.

The exhibition is organized by Lauren Hinkson, Associate Curator, Collections, and Susan Thompson, Associate Curator, with Levi Prombaum, Curatorial Assistant, Collections.
