Black Women Photographers: A Collective Transforming the Industry
Black Women Photographers (BWP), founded by Polly Irungu in 2020, is a global collective connecting over 2,100 Black and African photographers across 60+ countries. BWP provides visibility, resources, and financial support, having disbursed over $185,000 since its launch. The initiative challenges the narrative that Black women creatives are difficult to discover, and its recent COOPH-sponsored exhibition showcases the diverse talents of its members. BWP’s active database connects photographers with brands and art buyers, creating significant opportunities for Black women in photography.
Cholitas Bravas - Celia D. Luna
Celia D. Luna is a visual artist and portrait photographer whose work is deeply influenced by her Peruvian heritage. Known for her project "Cholitas Bravas," she captures the strength and resilience of the Cholitas—indigenous Andean women—through vibrant, powerful portraits. Raised in rural Peru, Celia’s photography reflects the vivid colors and mystical stories of her upbringing, blending traditional elements with modern techniques. Splitting her time between Miami and Mexico City, her unique style and cultural storytelling resonate globally, offering a fresh perspective on cultural identity and female empowerment.
