Giovanna Aryafara is an Australian photographic artist based in Bali whose work explores culture, humanity, and traditional ways of life.
The Body as Language draws from Giovanna’s long-term engagement with the Surma community in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley. The series focuses on body painting as a form of expression, where individuals create intricate designs using natural materials sourced from the surrounding landscape. White clay, ochre pigments, and organic elements such as flowers are applied directly to the skin, forming compositions that are both personal and ephemeral.
Giovanna’s approach is grounded in sustained presence. Returning over the course of a decade, she documents daily life through observation rather than intervention. The images emphasize gesture, surface, and detail, allowing each composition to emerge from the interaction between subject and environment. Natural light and minimal staging maintain a direct and unembellished visual language.
The work reflects an ongoing interest in how identity is shaped through connection to place. Within the Surma community, body painting is not fixed but continuously reimagined, allowing for individual expression within a shared cultural practice.
Giovanna’s work has been exhibited internationally and featured in National Geographic Italy and India. She has received recognition, including the Africa in Focus Prize and an Honourable Mention at the International Photography Awards.
