Laurel Chor

Shark fins destined for China are laid out to dry at a processing facility in Negombo, Sri Lanka
I took this picture of shark fins drying at a fish market in Negombo, Sri Lanka. As a Hong Konger, I grew up eating shark fin's soup. It's an unsustainable practice that must be stopped for the sake of our oceans, but I also think that Western conservation efforts have often taken misguided, uninformed, and insensitive approaches to changing consumer behavior in other cultures. As a conservation photographer, I hope to spark empathetic, nuanced, and informed dialogues that open and change minds.

Bio: Laurel Chor is an Emmy-nominated journalist, photographer, documentary filmmaker, and National Geographic Explorer from Hong Kong. She covers a planet in crisis, focusing on conflict and climate change.

Jen Guyton

Untitled
Soon after dawn at Lemek Conservancy, Kenya, spotted hyenas arrive at a pond to drink. Widely misunderstood, hyenas are fierce, intelligent, and social, living and hunting as members of matriarchal clans. This close-up was captured by a remote-controlled robot designed by National Geographic Magazine photo engineers.

Bio: Jen Guyton is a National Geographic Explorer and award-winning conservation photographer, delving into the outer wilds of Earth’s most untamed landscapes and the inner wilds of human connection to nature. With a PhD in ecology and a passion for storytelling, her images ignite curiosity and action for our planet’s most fragile ecosystems. Jen’s work bridges science and soul, inspiring us to protect the wild places within and around us.

Beverly Joubert

Red Alert
The image Red Alert is probably one of my most iconic images of the rhino move in Botswana (2015). After we relocated 87 adults to safety, 76 new calves were born, and many more will arrive in the future.

Bio: Beverly Joubert is a world-renowned, award-winning filmmaker, photographer, conservationist, and a National Geographic Explorer-at-Large. Alongside her husband, Dereck Joubert, she co-founded Great Plains Conservation and Great Plains Foundation, managing over 1.5 million acres of wild lands in Africa. She has co-produced over 40 films for National Geographic, winning multiple Emmys, Peabody Awards, and a Presidential Order of Meritorious Service from Botswana.

Amy Gulick

Circle of Life

Coastal brown bears (Ursus arctos) in Alaska have the opportunity to fatten up for winter hibernation by feeding on millions of Pacific salmon as the fish migrate to their spawning grounds. The annual fish feast only lasts a few weeks, but it’s a critical time in which bears can gain up to 50% of their body weight

Bio: Amy Gulick is a founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers. Her award-winning books include The Salmon Way: An Alaska State of Mind and Salmon in the Trees: Life in Alaska’s Tongass Rain Forest. Her work has been featured in National Wildlife, Sierra, Outdoor Photographer, and more.

Aishwarya Sridhar

The exotic pet trade is increasing globally, and Southeast Asia is a major hub. In May 2023, I was in Bangkok, investigating the trade of Indian star tortoises. Each year, millions of wild animals are sold around the world, destined for people’s basements and backyards.

Bio: Aishwarya Sridhar is a National Geographic Explorer, award-winning wildlife filmmaker, photographer, and presenter. Named one of the 50 Explorers changing the world by the Explorer's Club, NYC, in 2022, she uses visual media to create conservation impact.
