Julia Buruleva is a Barcelona-based photographer and art director. She specializes in conceptual art, fashion, and advertising in the photography and motion picture industry. Originally born in Russia, she completed her degree in Saint Petersburg University of Art and Culture as a fine art photographer. Later on she began to work as a commercial photographer for about ten years and then decided to quit and travel the world.
She settled in Barcelona because to her it represents a city which combines a creative atmosphere in the spirit of freedom and fun with a powerful cultural background in architecture, painting and music.
Julia has done some editorial work with SICKY Magazine, L’Officiel, InSTYLE, PAP, Solstice, HUF and Rolling Stone. Julia is represented by InsideOut Gallery (Brussels) and Begemot Art Gallery (Barcelona).
We asked Julia to walk us through some of her greatest and latest shots in this PROFOLIO…
This image is made on Lanzarote Island (one of the Canarias) with its incredible volcanic landscapes. I had to lay myself in each of these volcanic pits for growing grapes.
One of my favorite ways to create is based on an open call - To participate, you do not need to be a professional model. I never know how many people will show up. Nor do I know how they will look or what their personality will be like. I just offer the central visual theme (location, props, etc.) and create circumstances and some memorable moments to appear. I let the models improvise, just direct them softly.
I never know exactly how things will go in a photoshoot. I don't have the final image in my mind; I just invite people and let things happen.
This one was shot near Moscow, on the sand quarry. The shoot's theme was Color, so the only thing the girls knew was that their bodies would be painted in different colors. It was a bit extreme because many onlookers passed by and were very curious about what was happening. Happily, we had the bodyguard with us, my friend Vladimir, who protected us.

A beach is a place for ART, not for sunbathers only. I live in Barcelona - the city located near the sea. And these beaches inspire me to create my own theatre - surreal scenes set to a simple landscape. It's like my own studio without walls and a ceiling. This image was inspired by the Liceu Opera Theatre. I've been there before, looked at the beautiful interior, and decided - why not bring this kind of opera chair to the beach?
I included this image to have one "beauty" shot in the selection. And this is my favorite one. This series "SPRING" was published in Sicky magazine. It's continuing my idea of using what you have around. Not to wait for something special - just to use what the circumstances offer. It was springtime, and we had a lot of mimosa flowers in Barcelona. So I offered my friend and makeup artist Anastasia @nastia.mua to create some kind of blossom makeup. That was a long process, but we did it.
