Caroline White is an American fine art photographer, filmmaker, and former actress based between Los Angeles and San Diego. Over more than two decades, she has developed a practice centered on underwater portraiture — images made in private pools, natural bodies of water, and custom aquatic environments throughout Southern California and internationally.
The work is built around a specific kind of collaboration. White works closely with each subject, guiding them through movement, breath, and stillness in water. The results are cinematic — fabric suspended mid-drift, bodies caught between rising and sinking, light refracting across skin. The surface of the water functions less as a boundary than as a threshold, and her images tend to live right at that edge.
Her background shapes the approach in ways that go beyond technique. A lifelong sailor and survivor of multiple near-drowning experiences, White brings a psychological intimacy to the relationship between body and water that reads clearly in the work. There is weight to these images — not drama for its own sake, but something more interior. Vulnerability rendered visible.
Her photographs have appeared in Business Insider, Artnet, Metro UK, Creative Boom, LensCulture, and Elephant Magazine. She works across fine art, maternity, couples, and personal branding photography, and her practice extends into underwater filmmaking and performance direction.
