Sandra Ventura is a Portuguese photographer whose work centers on aging, memory, and the passage of time. In Lines of Time, she turns her lens toward older adults across Portugal, creating portraits that move beyond documentation to reflect presence, dignity, and lived experience.
Working primarily with institutionalized elderly communities, Sandra approaches her subjects with a sense of care and continuity. Each portrait is grounded in attention—small gestures, expressions, and the subtle marks of time that define a face. Rather than framing age as decline, the series emphasizes individuality, inviting viewers to consider the richness of lives often overlooked.
There is a quiet intimacy throughout the work. The images do not seek spectacle or sentimentality; instead, they offer space for recognition. Wrinkles, posture, and gaze become traces of history, revealing the accumulation of moments that shape a person. In this way, the portraits function not only as images, but as encounters—reminding us that time is both visible and shared.
Sandra’s practice has been exhibited widely in Portugal and internationally, and her work has received numerous awards across portrait and fine art photography, including recognition from the Black & White Spider Awards and the World Cup Photographic Awards.
