Alice Zilberberg is an internationally acclaimed artist and photographer born in the former Soviet Union, raised in Israel, and now based in Tel Aviv. A graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University's Photography program, she began her practice as a painter — a foundation that remains visible in everything she makes.
Her accolades are extensive: a Hasselblad Masters award, first-place titles at the International Photography Awards, the Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, and the Fine Art Photography Awards, among others. Her work has been exhibited alongside Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham, and she has been featured across MTV, CBC, and Breakfast Television.
But the credentials only tell part of the story. What Zilberberg has spent over a decade developing is a technique that sits somewhere between photography, digital painting, and montage. Each finished work is an amalgam of many photographs — backgrounds, animals, and atmospheric elements gathered across travels around the world — assembled in post-production with a painter's eye for color, tone, and composition. Individual works take months to complete.
Her current series, Meditations, distills this process into something quieter and more searching. The works place animals — bears, bison, birds — into ethereal, minimalist environments rendered in mist and pale light. The effect is meditative, almost devotional. The animals are digitally displaced from their surroundings, mirroring their real displacement in the wild caused by human interference. Each image gives them a home that, in many cases, no longer exists.
The series functions simultaneously as tribute, a conservation statement, and an invitation to stillness — to find, as Zilberberg puts it, happiness in the moment.
