Thandiwe Muriu is a photographer born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. As a female artist working in a formerly male-dominated field, one of her greatest passions is centered around celebrating and empowering fellow women. Her CAMO series does just that.
These portraits showcase Africa’s multi-dimensional vibrant cultures, and textiles. The images celebrate her African heritage and tackle important issues, dealing with identity and self-perception. The creation of these photographs drew inspiration from African textiles, and every day objects.
The press release states, “Through CAMO, Thandiwe aims to reclaim the self-love of the African woman who is often excluded from beauty standards in her own country.”
The series was shot utilizing a Nikon D850 and Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens.
Thandiwe has previously exhibited at Scope Art Fair (Miami), and in 2021 won the Female in Focus Single Image Award.
