Since 2015, Felix Mayrl and Olivier Colin of the photographic collective "Kollektiv-Lumen" have been at the forefront of a groundbreaking endeavor in contemporary photography with their IRIS PROJECT. This initiative explores the uniqueness of the human iris, transforming it into a lens through which the diversity and beauty of humanity are magnified. Through their work, they aspire to forge a universal connection among all people by spotlighting the individuality encapsulated within each iris.
Driven by a blend of artistic curiosity and technical prowess, Mayrl and Colin have developed a specialized camera system in-house. This system captures the intricate details of the iris, revealing its complex patterns and vibrant melanin colors, which they describe as the "three-dimensional landscape" within the eye. Each photograph is an intimate portrait of an individual’s identity, showcasing the iris as a unique piece of natural art.
Operating from their studio in Leipzig, Germany, Kollektiv-Lumen combines a variety of disciplines including optics, lighting technology, and 3D printing to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with photographic technology. Their innovative approach has earned them the Innovative Award from the Chamber of Artisans of Saxony in 2018, recognizing their contributions to both technology and creative photography.
IRIS PROJECT has gained international acclaim, with exhibitions in cities like Stockholm, Dubai, and Singapore. At each venue, from the Red Dot Museum's "Human - Nature" exhibition to the Cannes Film Festival, Kollektiv-Lumen showcases the profound connection between individual identity and universal humanity through the lens of the iris. This project is not just a showcase of technological innovation but a celebration of the personal and collective stories that define us.
