Photographer Donavon Smallwood is this year’s Aperture Portfolio Prize Winner. In celebration, Baxter St at the Camera Club in New York City hosted Donavon’s exhibition opening. The series is titled “Languor” and was taken in New York’s Central Park, “envisioning Black tranquility at the center of the urban landscape” (from the Press Release).
Out of 1,200 photo submissions, Donavon’s photos were chosen. You can catch them in Aperture Magazine’s Summer 2021 issue. Accompanying the show is an essay written by Mikelle Street. In it, Mikelle explains that Donavon was inspired by “The Lost Neighborhood under New York’s Central Park,” which is a mini-doc released on Vox last year. The film relays the story of Seneca Village, an African American community that excited on the land in the nineteenth century.
