This week, COOPH highlights “Darkwater” by Sinden Collier. The words of W.E.B. Du Bois is the root of the inspiration for the series. Du Bois was a strong advocate in the belief system that words are strong but visual context speaks where the message transcends language.
From the press release, “He (Du Bois) knew that within art lie the qualities of creativity, self-expression, and communication. Art is a language that decreases literacy and touches values. Darkwater is a visual narrative of Du Bois’ The Souls of Black Folk.”
Sinden Collier was the first female Black photographer to be signed to Getty Images. She was exhibited in Nordstrom’s National Juried Show of African American Photographers, titled, “Love Now’ Exhibit - Nordstrom Celebrates Black History Month. Additionally, her work was featured in Elle, W, Italian Elle, Flaunt, and Ebony, amongst various other publications.
